GUTS: Edgemont Student Opinions

Singer, songwriter, and actress Olivia Rodrigo recently released her sophomore

album, GUTS, on September 8, 2023. In 2021, she released her first album, SOUR, after her single, “Drivers License,” turned into a hit. Her second album, GUTS, has captivated audiences since its release, inviting a myriad of emotional responses and sparking thought-provoking conversations.

The impact of GUTS on its listeners cannot be understated. It navigates themes of heartbreak, self-reflection, and personal growth with raw honesty and vulnerability. Rodrigo's ability to articulate intense emotions through her music creates a space for individuals to reflect, heal, and find strength.

Here is what a few Edgemont students have to say about GUTS:

“My favorite song is “Get Him Back!” I like that some of the songs have a pop-rock sound. I also like that the lyrics seem genuine and that the songs differentiate from one another and aren’t all on the same topic.” - Anonymous Edgemont Sophomore

“I really like Olivia Rodrigo’s new album GUTS. I think it’s very different from her first album. It has lots of styles of music in it. My favorite song would be ‘Ballad of a Homeschool Girl’ or ‘Pretty Isn’t Pretty.’ I honestly like all of them, it’s hard to choose a favorite! I like both SOUR and GUTS, but if I had to choose, I think I like GUTS a little better.” - Anonymous Edgemont Freshman

“I really liked the new album and thought that it was very relatable. I really like the songs ‘Pretty Isn’t Pretty’, ‘Teenage Dream’ and ‘Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl.’” - Anonymous Edgemont Freshman

“Omg I don’t even know where to start. The new album is really good. Sadly, I can relate to a lot of the songs. Olivia Rodrigo is so good at putting how she feels into words. I think that SOUR and GUTS are very different from each other. SOUR is more about the ex and GUTS is more about Olivia. She better make more music soon!!!” - Anonymous Edgemont Junior

GUTS is amazing. I love everything that Olivia Rodrigo does, but this album is truly incredible. The whole album is just so relatable. My favorite songs on the album are currently ‘The Grudge’ and ‘Love is Embarrassing.’” - Anonymous Edgemont Senior

“I really like how Olivia Rodrigo’s music speaks to her emotions and experiences. Her songs are so relatable and capture the rollercoaster of teenage emotions. Whether it’s heartbreak, friendship, or self-discovery, her lyrics are extremely powerful. Her music is the best to blast in the car and to sing along to. Olivia’s music really validates the ups and downs of being a teenage girl.” - Anonymous Edgemont Edgemont Junior

“Honestly, I think I like SOUR, Olivia’s first album, better than GUTS. The songs resonate with me more and the music is a bit softer, which I like. GUTS is too harsh for me.” - Anonymous Edgemont Freshman

“There is so much to say about GUTS. It is truly an album with no skippable songs. I L.O.V.E. the melody, tune, lyrics, and beat of every song. I cannot stop going around my house belting out the words to every one of her songs. My family finds me so annoying. I’m on the waiting list to get tickets for her upcoming tour. Hopefully I’m lucky enough to secure tickets for me and my friends.” - Anonymous Edgemont Sophomore

“I think the new album is so great. It’s amazing how Olivia continues to pursue her passion of writing music and performing for people of all ages. Her music is inspiring and relatable, especially the song, ‘Pretty Isn’t Pretty’ on the album, GUTS. I love how she continues to focus her music on similar topics that are meaningful to her.” - Anonymous Edgemont Seventh Grader

“GIMMEEEEEEEE GUTS TOUR TICKETSSSSSSSS!” - Anonymous Edgemont Senior
